Teori lama yang sudah beredar adalah apabila sisi otak kiri dominan, maka Anda lebih berpikir logis dan pintar dalam matematika serta bahasa. Berbeda dengan otak kanan yang lebih dominan, Anda biasanya lebih kreatif dan artistik.
Tapi seorang ilmuwan terkemuka dari University of Utah Jeffrey Anderson telah melakukan penelitian lebih dari seribu otak manusia. Ia membandingkan kerja otak dari sisi yang berbeda. Ia juga mengatakan kepada BBC Trending bahwa penelitiannya menegaskan teori otak kiri vs kanan sebenarnya mitos.
"Beberapa orang ada yang lebih metodologis, logis kognitif, dan lain-lainnya tanpa hambatan, gaya spontan. (Tapi), ini tidak ada hubungannya dengan perbedaan setiap tingkat fungsi dari [otak] kiri dan kanan,"kata Anderson kepada BBC seperti dilansir Refinery29.
Anderson bukanlah ilmuwan pertama yang menyebut teori otak kiri logika dan kanan kreatif sebagai teori palsu. Pada tahun 2013, seorang ilmuwan syaraf kognitif bermitra dengan seorang penulis menulis di sebuah artikel di majalah Time menyebutkan pembagian otak kanan, otak kiri tidak benar. Beberapa anggota lain dari komunitas ilmiah juga menunjukkan dikotomi tersebut tidak masuk akal.
Sebenarnya cerita otak kanan kiri bermula dari serangkaian operasi pada tahun 1960, 70-an, dan 80-an oleh dokter Roger W. Sperry, seorang pemenang Nobel neuroscientist di California Institute of Technology, dan neuroscientist kognitif terkenal Michael Gazzaniga.
Kedua pria menemukan kedua bagian dari otak seperti entitas independen, dengan gaya pengolahan yang kontras. Temuan ini diadaptasi untuk buku dan kuis.
Namun baru-baru ini, Gazzinga memperingatkan teori otak kanan dan otak kiri yang kita kenal tidak akurat. Dia mengatakan kepada Los Angeles Magazine, "Dinamika sederhana 'otak kiri melakukan hal ini, otak kanan melakukan itu' merupakan cara yang berlebihan."
